Portumna 100km U-marathon and marathon
Hi Guys,
SEB fitness is organising a 100km in Portumna County Galway.
The event also have a 50km U-marathon and marathon which will be held on the same course.
more details can be found here :

Hi Pat,
Seb may be able to correct me on this but it is all on forest roads. Not your average fire roads now. It has been recently resurfaced and it is in great condition. I went around the course yesterday and its a lovely route.
Sean
Enjoyed the run yesterday. Well organized. Well off my target time unfortunately but there is always next year!! I am just wondering where the food is at the end of the race or is there any. An old bannana would be majic at the end but I failed to fond any grub yesterday?
Hi Guys,
the course look like this :
http://picasaweb.google.com/Locteau/Portumna100km#
there is a small parts with leaves on the asphalt but not a major problem.
Can't see an issue, I planned to have Banna, oranges, apples, with water, coke, energy drinks...... should be plenty.
I will keep some special banna especially for you "a week old" if that's ok :-)
How was this event last year? I've run two city marathons and was thinking of participating in this.
Not sure about the idea of laps though. Also I've a very average pb of 4hr 32 which I'm hoping to improve on...wondering is this event for more seasoned runners only?
It was not on last year, so first year and test, so I need to get it right and hope that my 10 years experience in organising events will pay !
Keep in mind that the main idea is to have the first annual 100km in the country and I need to follow some guidelines from the Ultra communoty which is growing fast. I t would be very hard to manage people over a longer distance especially when it is new in Ireland (not completly but for most people) This is the reason behind the 5km loop, to tailor the event for ultra runners.
Hi Guys,
just let you know that we receive our AAI permit for the 3 running events.
Signed up for the marathon today - looking forward to it...
Are places limited for marathon or ultra? Dont know yet what I'll be able for!
Hi Lucy,
you don't need to worry about it, there will be room for you:-)
The earliest is always the best, as we need to get the medals etc....
Im hoping to give the 50k a go. I did the Connemara Ultra (and enjoyed it, in a sadistic sort of way!!)and doing marathon in Newry 31st May, Im afraid my legs will be really wrecked by then, thus my reticence. I'll put a few more long runs behind me and then I'll be more confident. I love that forest park, thats why I want to do it. Its such a beautiful spot. Thanks for setting up the opportunity. I hope it goes really well for you.
You are welcome :-)
Guys a quick question, what kind of Tshirt would you like ?
A technical Tshirt or nice good quality cotton Tshirt ?
not fussy seb, if it goes down to choice i would go cotton tee shirt
Great idea to use Portumna. Looking forward to 26th Seb. Technical tee if theres a choice.
Hi, can I download a paper entry form?
Coming over from Sasana
Has Dave Brady entered from Atha Cilath?
Hi Nukes,
email me on info@sebfitness.com and I will check what I can do for you.
Did you try to enter online, it would save us lots of time.

Technical t shirt but to be honest I (and I bet most runners) have drawer fulls of them so if it saved on cost/organisation I doubt people would mind if they didnt get one. I am partial to a nice medal though!
Help! I trained for Connemara Ultra and finished it in one piece with no immediate after effects. Two weeks later I did a 4.5 day walk covering 88 miles with no immediate after effects. Im training for Newry marathon 31st May but in terms of long runs since Connemara I have only managed 13, 12 and 2 x 10 miles on long runs and about 4 other runs per week between 4 and 7 miles. I want to do Portumna 50k. I feel tired all the time and my muscles just feel constantly tight, Im better running than not running (I stiffen when Im sitting for long periods) and I'll have a sports massage tomorrow and a few sessions in the pool and Im fairly good for stretching but Im just wondering does this sound familiar to any experienced runners - is my body finally telling me to rest? Or is this whats called "overtraining? My head is probably already giving me the answer to this but I want to go with my heart!
My plan is to get around Newry and then use the Hal Higdon plan for marathons with 4 week intervals (ie do 50k on marathon training only but having a 39 miler under my belt since 11th April!)
Does this sound crazy?
I promise to rest from 27th June!!!!
PS Im a 4 - 15 to 4 - 30 marathoner.
I think you answered your own questions to be honest :-)
Just remember that recovery is an important factor. Ultra running is very special reagrding training and it is very personal in term of training.
You seems to have done the mileage so what about reducing the quantity, rest more than usual and go back again gradually depending on the feelings of the legs.
Even a week, would not mess your training up, so take care of yourself.
Thanks for that - yes, always good to listen to your body and Im feeling better already for having had some TLC. See you in Portumna!!!
Lucy, in the same boat. Pretty sure I was overtrained and depleted prior to Connemara and had a hard day at the office then. Since then its been all downhill, tired and getting more so, heavy legs, lungs not able for it and this was all when trying to do 'small' distances, 5miles say....
Had to take a rest, only betting back this week and still off the pace I was able to train at and the distance by a long way but gradually (very gradually) getting a bit better day by day. Probably underestimated the shock to the system the ultra trainign and run would have and I think that pushing on would only have made things worse. If you have the work done, you will manage Newry on whats already in the bank, ease off, rest, mayvbe even take some supplements and see
Thanks DSE death. Yes I thought I was doing great the weeks immediately after Connemara but feeling it now. I cant even get my nutrition right at the minute, mileage down drastically but Im still fueling for the higher mileage as I feel hungry. Im taking 2 weeks off work and hoping that with that extra stress out of the way I can get the rest of the stuff on track. I was so dligent before the ultra re my training plan but no one tells you what to do after!!! How on earth do some people to multiple ultras in quick succession. I can manage marathons with a couple of weeks between them but the ultra really stumped me. Making me think twice now about doing it next year but Im sure once this dark spell passes I'll be on the Connemarathon web site again!!!!
Was training for Conn but never made due to a bug and since then have had to cancel a lot of the races that I had planned cause this bug really loves me and won't go away;-) Running is really had work now even though I was doing 30milers plus for the training for Conn, but am determined to make Portumna...was aiming for the 100 but will be happy with the 50 and try keep going till I know I can't do anymore! But had been advised to keep the millage low (by the doc) but have just began to increase it slowely and am going to do Cork with a run/walk strategy just so that if I have to I won't be gutted and it will be one of the longest runs I will have done in ages and while at one hand I'm dreading it on the other hand it will give me an indications of what I will be able for in Portumna. Havent been on the sight in ages but glad I did as I don't fell so alone in this, yvonne
Seb,
I've entered the marathon distance & am looking forward to the event.
I was disappointed to see in the information pack that personal music systems are banned.
Is this policy being strictly enforced?
I'm guilty of enjoying the distraction & motivation of music when running.
Many thanks,
Gar.
Hi Gar,
If I want to get a IAU permit which I applied, I unfortunately can't allow it, I need to show that I do follow the rules to get my event up the ladder :-)
Seb
I am following the ultra ladies 50k schedule which has us doing a 26 mile run and a 10 on saturday/sunday this weekend. someone suggested that it is too close to the race , but looking on other ultra plans, there seems to be a standard two week taper rather than 3 weeks for ultras?
Should we go ahead with the 26/10 or drop the mileage a bit and take it easier for the big day?
That's fair enough Seb, thanks.
HI Gar.
Im trying to train myself off an ipod as well, so if we are anywhere around the same slow pace , perhaps we can share the odd sentence or tune. Although I will be trying NOT to sing out loud as there will be others around.
there will be music..... every 5km, so anybody want a special tune, email it to me....
Guys,
I am building a music list for the events, so if you have any songs that I can get easely I will put it on the PA system for you. I just hope you will hear it at the right time. lol
Scooby - I'm hoping for sub4 but the way my training has been going I'll settle for a PB, which would mean beating 4 32.
How does that compare with you - will we be breaking into song together!!??
Gar

Hi Seb,
I'm doing the 50k and I was just wondering about the laps - will I have to keep track of how many laps I've done or will I be told at the 5k point what lap I'm on?
Also, I'm assuming registration is the night before (6-8pm?) in the hotel, is that right?
D.
Seb will be late checking in as have to be in Cavan all day friday and don't expect to hit Portumna till around 9pm will that be a problem for registration?
Hi Guys,
We will count your laps as much as possible with a marshal and clipboard, along with the timing. But I am sure you can count to 10 :-)
Registration will be 6-8 pm and if you can come at those time please, remember that we have lots of work to do before the event start at 6 am so will be on the course at around 4 am to make sure everything is ready (2 hours is not very much to finalize the set up), start/Finish line, Tables, drinks etc.... and then will be up for minimum 17 hours :-)
This can't be left out in the evening due vandalism especially on the friday night.
10 sweeties in the pocket. eat one each lap :-)
10 mini elastic bands on the fingers and discard one at each lap.
10 biro marks on the hands and wipe one off each lap.
:-)
What about a 500g stones for each lap to motivate you :-)
ok maybe only 200g.....
Hi Guys a few things before you all get my email over the weekend....
- Music list now closed :D and on my itune list I am working on it.
- I will allow a few walkers on the day to promote the locals and the volunteers who give their free times.
- If you have problem to register on the friday evening due travel etc.... let me know and email me directly I will try to help has much as we can.
Remember I have all the set up to be ready for 6am and a bit of sleep would be welcome !
Hi, thanks for the feedback on counting laps - especially Scooby's helpful hints - like the eat one sweetie per lap : -)
It's getting very close now....eke!
Seb Can you confirm where the registration for the marathon (not ultra) takes place and what time - details say 8 to 9am, is that on the Saturday morning and is it just at the car park for the Forest Park? Thanks.
Seb,
Re : Refreshment Stations
Is the water at the refreshment stations in bottles - if so is it 250ml? Also have you purchased the electrolyte drinks, if so, what size & brand? (sorry but trying to work out my hydration strategy)
Finally, are there bins on the course? Or can we throw our empties at the next refreshment station. I dont wont to litter the forest park, but than again, if it's being cleaned afterwards...
Many thanks,
Gar
- there will be small water bottles, that I will pick up today
- Coca Cola and lucozade
- Bins will be at the refreshment tables
- Energy drinks will be in a drum of 30l of High 5 (summer fruits)
Well done to Seb and all the team on a fantastic event today. Huge congratulations to the 100K and 50K runners. Fantastic stuff. I felt like I was doing a fun run as I plodded around the marathon.
Great venue, great organisation, the most encouraging officials and helpers ever, best of luck next year!
