Hi all,
I come looking for advice! Did my first 10-mile yesterday, in preparation for the Achill half-marathon at the weekend. All went well, apart from the two-inch set of blisters I now have on my instep. One burst while I ran, and there's no skin left on it - it's about the size of a two-euro coin. What's the best thing to do to get it healed by the weekend?!
Thanks for your help.

Hi CorkNovice,

I have a recurring blister on my instep for the last few months and I'm afraid all the advice I've got (doctors, nurses, runners!) is that the only way to deal with it is to let it heal. Not ideal when you have a race coming up and to be honest, I ran several 5km races with the blister and against advice. Try blister socks and a special blister plaster which worked for me once or twice. Ultimately though, you have to just let it heal. The fact that mine keeps coming back suggests it's a shoe/gait problem which I justn't have got sorted yet. Hope you get a solution to yours.

Hi CorkNovice

Blisters are lousy things. The special blister plasters are really good and you can stick one on but I'm not sure it will be healed as quickly as you would like.

As for prevention, try running in the twin-layer special socks as they are pretty good at stopping blisters occurring.

Good luck!

Hi CorkNovice,

I found that Compeed is your only man for fixing blisters - they're a little pricey (EUR8 for a packet of 10 last I bought some), but they work! They form a seal around the blister, allow the tissue to heal gently (it doesn't form a scab) and you can still run while using them. They're available in Boots and most chemist shops.

To prevent blisters in the future, I recommend using the twin layer socks as advised below, and also rubbing Vaseline on your feet before you go.

Best of luck with Achill this weekend, here's hoping for some good weather!

Hi Cork Novice,
I have the same problem. No matter what I do, the blister keeps coming back, especially after 5k. Meditape over the area works for me, sometimes, but hard to use in Triathlons when it gets wet.
Even with twin-layer socks it keeps coming back. Anyone any help?
I heard rubbing surgical spirits into the area on a regular basis will harden the skin. I tried this, but didn't work for me.

Thanks for the reply guys!
Blisters are healing up fine, it's the burst one that is proving problematic! I'm just going to hope for the best and bandage it up firmly and get on with it!
Best of luck on Saturday to everyone else doing Achill.

Dear Guys,

If you have blisters on your foot or on your heel, you can be 100% sure that something is not good with your shoes. It does not fit well. Your foot is slipping forward and backward or up and down. Maybe just did not tighten your shoe laces, or you just can change the insoles or socks. I run mostly over 20K, once a week longer 30 to 45K runs so around 100-125 a week, without no blisters. One of my shoes is a 30euros Adidas the other is an Endurance shoe from TNF, and no blisters, even if it is raining, mostly I run offroad where your foot is more prone to blisters, but nothing.
However prevention is the first, before long runs I put Vaseline between my fingers as it will stay there not like other creams.
For good socks try this: http://www.x-socks.com/ , I use them in the last 1 year without any bad issues. You can order with free post and package from the uk, but in dublin you can find in a few places too. Pearl Izumi also have totaly seamless socks. And in Dunnes there are bamboo socks 3 euros 3 pair, suprisingly despite the price they work well even if they are not running socks, but as a cheeper solution.

See? We do love to recycle! You may have previously thrown all your energy bar wrappers in the bin but now you'll have a good use for them. An article in Runners World or Running Fitness (can't remember which) says to put one in between your sock and trainer and you'll be painfree from the blisters.

Happy day!
