A couple of friends and I are planning a trip to Ireland. We are not sure yet at what time of year we will go...truthfully, we are sort of planning it around a marathon and the weather. We'd like to go while there is nice weather (we are thinking warmer weather). As far as the marathon is concerned, we'd like a scenic course, I don't mind if there aren't many spectators, but the friends I am going with might find it a challenge without the cheering of spectators as this would be their first marathon (my 25th or so). Any suggestions for a first marathon for them would be greatly appreciated!

I'd definitely recommend the Dublin Marathon. Jim's right about the weather - you have a better chance of it being sunny and warm during the Longford race, but the last two years have seen beautiful weather on race day in October. I like the Longford marathon, but it's pretty lonely out there... very few runners and the spectators are pretty sparse. Dublin seems like much more of an "event", whereas Longford is less of an exciting time. If you want something truly unique, go for the Connemara marathon. If it's your first time in the country, you'll be blown away by the scenery. It's a tough course, but almost everyone loves it.
