The HEat
Hey guys, I'm currently training for my first marathon - I'm all registered in New York and very excited. However just wondering if anyone has any advice on the following.
So far I'm pretty much on course with my training schedule, but the last few long runs have been really difficult with the heat. Ran 10 miles on Monday (which is always my long run day, it's my day off) and made the awful mistake of heading out at 12 noon. Even though I was in the Phoenix Park the heat almost killed me.
So if it looks like it's going to be a sunny day, I'd definitely like to start doing my long runs in the morning. Just wondering what's the best way to organise eating around this? If I have breakfast, then I have to wait about 2 hours before I head out, but then I'd have to get up at 7 on my day off just to eat breakfast and digest.....!
Would it be sufficient to eat a carb-heavy dinner the night before? Or does anyone have any other tips.
Try not to do long runs in the evening, because I find I'm waiting around all day to do them.
Any advice appreciated. Thanks!
Hi There
I have been training for over 3 months now and am up to the 10 mile once a week. I usually have a high carb dinner the night before - usually lots of pasta and then in the morning I have a small bowl of porridge a slice of toast and a cup of tea and am good to go in 45 mins - it works for me -an hour is plenty of time if you have only had a small meal like this.
See how you go.

Same thing happened to me on holidays. Don't think it matters HUGELY about the food. I think the hydration is far more important, Organise some system for yourself to get regular drinks during your run. I would advise against holding something in your hand from a biomechanical point of view. Better hide a bottle in the bush, do laps or wear a belt with a bottle(s). HOpe the training is still going well. Keep it up. Go girl!!!
