Frank Duffy 10 Mile
HI There,
I completed the Frank Duffy 10 mile on Saturday, my first ever race and I am so delighted - did it in 1 hour 34.33.
Started training at the beginning of June - running 10/15 mins a day and just built it up..The atmosphere at the race was fantastic - it was perfect running weather with cloud cover and a nice cool breeze - ran a great mile 5/6 and 7
felt it a bit around mile 8 and 9 but picked it up again for the end... crossed the finish line and there was a massive flash of lightening and a crack of thunder just after it and the heavens opened - it did nothing to dampen the spirits of everybody though... so proud of my lovely Frank Duffy red T shirt - it has 10 MILE printed boldly at the front too... the goody bag was great aswell ! Overall I loved this race experience - I am signed up for the half marathon on the 20th Sept and I cannot wait.
I really want to hear any other Frank Duffy 10 mile experiences from Saturday?
Happy running!
thanks for your response Mais best of luck with the training. I am like a complete nerd about the whole running thing at the moment, its typical of a beginner! I wish this website was a bit more active - not much people on line blogging about their experiences - judging from saturday there are at least 3000 people out there giving it loads and where are they, I thought they would be dying to tell their stories.
Still waiting!
Denise
T-shirts were cool. Would have liked one other water station though. Explored parts of the park I would have never otherwise seen! Kudos to the organizers for having so many traffic marshals and ambulance crews. And thanks to all the volunteers for coming out!
There's a long thread on this at http://www.boards.ie/vbulletin/forumdisplay.php?forumid=322 :-)
Hey there everybody...what a day Saturday was, So delighted the rain held off and when it came, at least for me it was at the right time, mile 9 and that belt of thunder put the heeby jeebys up me and i made it for home!
Thank you to the volunteers on the day, as always you folks do an amazing job and to be very frank, a casual runner like me would not find the race so enjoyable if I had to carry lots of water, wait for cars to cross the road etc. So thank you very deeply.
Unfortunately I didnt get a T-shirt, same as the marathon in 07, by the time I got to the finish there were no XL left. (ye ye run faster). but I find it funny that the people who get there before me are mostly slim and trim but they take the XL and it's some of us "casual" runners at the back who need the larger sizes... Ah well, if i was running for the T-shirt alone id have an expensive clothes habit, and red would clash with my hair :-)))
Now, if I was to compare the 5 and 10 mile races the only differences i can see are, more people at the 10 miler but more importantly "no butter on the brack" back in the college, oh that was a special surprise after the 5 miler, any chance of butter for the half marathon :-))) well ya know, dont need XL for nothing........
So as i said, well done and thank you very much to everyone involved int he race. A special pat on the back for the volunteers!!!
Peace
Alan
do they give out the t shirts at the end of the race.
Yup Mick, T-Shirts handed out at the end with your goody bag, I was pleasantly surprised to see that there was no jar of French mustard in the goody bag like last year? I mean, thats gotta help you recover quicker from the run, everyone knows that :-)))
Peace
AL
Hi like myself i just completed my first 10 mile on sat finish time 1.37.58! At almost 40 I feel on a high - although I have a question I want to also run the half marathon next month so when should I start running again today Monday or tomorrow? I assume no more than about 4 miles?
Congrats to all who took part and thanks to all the volunteers who give their time free of charge.
Sweet website , I hadn't noticed www.runireland.com before till my friend told me about it.
Keep up the great work! I will be responding more at www.runireland.com
Looking forward to some good new friends here at www.runireland.com

So how did the half marathon go? Huge turnout at the weekend. This is my third year running and the Adidas Race Series was/is always a well organised, fun day out. I love the atmosphere of the mass participation events, as you get everything from elites to club runners to casual joggers to first timers, all with a different type of 'nerves'.
I ran the half and was pleased with it, felt strong the whole way until mile 11 and the Furry Glen burnt me out, nasty second half of that race. I was looking for the 12 mile marker from way out but finished well and was just 3 secs off my PR, pity as I know I could have made that up somewhere over the course.
The only quibble I'd have with the event was that there werent enough portaloos. the queues were 100+ long with 5 mins to go and I went to where the pond was and couldnt look anywhere with all the girls hiding behind trees :) I only wanted to hide my bag with my jacket and tracksuit bottoms in it.
The weather was great for running, cool, slight breeze in parts but no real rain. I imagine it must look great from the sidelines with thousands of people tramping along, especially at the start. Things soon open up though as the downhill to the zoo spreads people out pretty quick, you have to watch your step less and less and just concentrate on running. For me I always hate the section from the zopo back to the Castleknock Gate, maybe because it slightly uphilll, I dont know, but when you are facing back down towards ther main gate again its always smoother. Fior those that dont run in the park, the commentator warned that its the miles 8-11 that are hard and thats where the three hills come in. the first one up by the Magazine Fort was good for a change, I tucked in behind a guy running harder than I ever would on my own up the hill and just stayed with him. I passed loads on the way up, unusual for me and was grand at the top. After rounding the Papal Cross it was plain sailing down the road and acrosss the pitches except for a bit of a head wind (again tucked in behind guys going a bit faster and they dragged me on). Its the rise to the Upper Glrn and Furry Glen that usd up the last of the 'easy running'. It was tough from there on in, there is no time to recover before dropping down to the pond and back up again on the other side. From here it was holding my own but also where up to this point almost no-one was passing me, the stronger runners pushed on from mile 12, Maybe 20 or so passed me in the last mile, just means have to work harder next year on maintaining strength in the last bit.
I also always hate the final 400m, because I usually make sure that I have left nothing in the tank, it was all put out on the road. so even though the end is getting closer its really painful at that point and the stronger finishers put on a spurt which I find really hard to do. A guy passed me, screaming "Come on" to himself, so I hope he got what he was aiming for.
Happy with the race overall, but in general I am disappointed by the tshirts this year, they are of noticably inferior quality to 2 years ago say. In fact I always run in the tshirts from 2 years ago, they are great, but I guess this is recessionary times.
anyway onwards and upwards for the DCM, only 5 weeks to go as they said at the start, that put more of a shock up me than the impending race :)
Hey dsedeath, ran the half myself this weekend. 1:58 was delighted to finish felt great at the end and actually thought it would be worse! One part I hate about the Park is the avenue its so long its like the never ending road! Also the hill up the Kyber Road is relentless. But other than that its great! The bit of rain we had was also very welcome. Had to laugh as we ran by the football pitches, a couple of matches with spectators, all of them looking at us running by.
I presume your doing the Marathon? Im not sure myself as I had to take 2 weeks out recently for my holidays and did sweet F A while I was away. Its 5 weeks to go now and not sure if Ill get the mileage in before then. Will have to decide soon though closing date early October.
Yeah, doing the marathon, the five week countdown starts now. I had done a lot of work early in the year but let is slide a lot and need to put in some serious miles in the next few weeks. Essentially, the next three weekends @20 miles long run, then taper off for the last two weekends should be enough. Finishing the half in good form is a good yardstick though. If you could have done another 5 or so comfortably enough then you should be alright on the day of the marathon. The last 10k wilol always hurt, but thats what training is for....to keep you going when you want to stop. Best of luck with it.
I have top say I always like the avenue...heading towards the zoo...because its all downhill, if you look up you get a great view and if you dont want to look up you can hide behind someone and stare at the back of their neck or shoes if you are looking down. I dont like the avenue from the other direction, coming slightly uphill all the way...problem is that is the direction the marathon takes :) Still since I do all my running in the Park, when I hit it on the marathon, I tell myself, this is home turf...been there done that...its easy.......now if only I lived around Ballsbridge and could say that :)
Does anyone know of another 10 mile in November/December? I checked the Run Ireland website and only found one in October which I wont be here for but really want to sign up for a 10 mile before xmas?

Hi sounds like you did really well and enjoyed it. I'm just starting off like you were in June with 10/15 minutes and hopefully soon I'll be able to tackle a race but I couldn't imagine doing 10 miles yet. Well done! I hope some other Frank Duffy 10 milers come out of the woodwork to share their experience with you.
Best of luck with your running and keep posting you'll motivate me to keep going!!! :-)
