Not Being Able To Run This in 2007 Was A Heartbreaker...

In my foolish, and probably biased, opinion this is probably the best road race in Ireland. I just love the idea of racing over really long distances, where even for the fittest most experienced runners, making it over the finish line at all is a huge challenge. The combination of such a long race and the beauty of Connemara make this for me at least the best race on the island. I know it's not to everyone's taste but then again I hate 5k's.

I trained hard for this in the early part of this year running 80 and 90 mile weeks through January and February. Unfortunately I was pushing too hard and came a cropper with injury that I still havn't shaken. I can't get the race out of my head though and I'd love to give it another shot next year.

I was lucky enough to be at the finish line in March when Marty Rea and Thomas Maguire stode over the finish line seperated only by a handful of yards. Two brave men. Two great runners.

I'd love to be back by next March. I have to be back by next March. See you there.

Good to hear from you Mick. If you can make it over to Westport tomorrow there is a run up Croagh Patrick (see www.imra.ie) starting at 2.30.

Regards,

Mick Hanney

Hi,

Thats what I get for skimming your posting and not seeing the 'still have shaken the injury bit'. I wish you well with your recovery. My brain was making up possible injuries and reasons to pull out of last Saturday's Croagh Patrick run from very early on. I persevered and finished in a respective 15th or so. Pics on www.imra.ie A great day and a fantastic event. The following day, a change of scene and another mountain, this time Ben Gorm overlooking Aisleagh Falls beside Leenane. 1 hr and 30+ mins later and many falls in the wet and mud later it was over. Another great run. Makes a nice change from running on the road and it brings a smile to the face (once the aches and pains clear that is).

regards,

Mick H
