Is anyone running any other Ultra's this year...?
I know they're few and far between in Ireland AFAIK there's only Connemara and the Wicklow Way race, but there are some fantastic races in the UK and Europe.
Anyone travelling ?
Doh. That was me. I didn't realise I wasn't logged on :-)
Good grief - a double ironman!
Go on, tell me, what are the distances ?? I assume this is all on one day.
yep, standard IM is 3.8 km swim, 180 km bike and 42.4 km run so double is just that 7.6/360 &84.8. I think the cutoffi s 32 hours but I would hope to get finished in one day (i.e. less than 24 hours)
That doesn't scare me in the way the marathon de sables does. It's not about the distances or the terrain or the climate. I'm really scared about camping. Ive never gone camping in my life. I'm very much a 5* kind of girl and that part of it is terrifying me :-)
Hi,
Speaking of mad ultras, there is a great article in the latest runners world magazine by Richard Donovan who did the Amazon Jungle Ultra which takes place over a no. of days and totals well over 100 miles. Its more of an endurance test than anything else with lots of things in the jungle - the plants, animals and underlying conditions liable to cause you serious injury or worse! Mad!

Mick Hanney
Wow - I've never heard of the double Ironman. That's impressive. I just Googled it and found a triple Ironman in France. The winning time was 36 hours. The last place time was 53 hours. I'll remember not to whinge at the 3 hour mark at my next marathon!
I think it's like anything, It's not the distance but the pace that will always get people. There is a deca-ironman (yep 10 of 'em!) in France also as far as I know.
Hi there Smiley, I'm new to this forum having just googled double ironman in Ireland. I completed the Uk Ironman in August 2007 and I'm signed up for Ironman France in June this year. I'm really considering a 2009 Double. Did you compete yours or are you still in training? Do you know of other athletes you have completed Doubles, there doesn't seem to be much info on other Irish athletes. Any advice? Thanks Patrick
I ran a double in Germany 7 years ago and other races, I hope to prepare a deca in the UK for 2009, but that's a secret :-). Th eonly problem is that they do small loops which is annoying but I suppose good for safety. Same for the deca.
There is no smiley here, but you can go around it.
Keep looking here, most of the races will be on the calendar, and triathlon are coming soon, I am sure there will be a race that you will find interesting soon, especially if you like long distance triathlon.
Hi Patrick,
In the end I didn't sign up for Levi this year. It was a mixture of finances and with two athletes in the house, we had to balance our timetables and my partners channel swim take precedence over my events this year. I did manage to fit an 80 mile ultra in this weekend though. I'm stiff as a board today but it was great fun!
Jo

not this year. Like Ray I've foolishly signed up for MdeS 09. Next year I'm planning a double ironman so I guess that technically has an ultra at the end :-)
